(The Right Path):
A Leadership Program for Adults

The Right Path is a leadership development program for members of the EBCI that is in its inaugural year. The 12-month program works to bridge the past and present by covering traditional and cultural elements in depth, as well as introducing contemporary leadership development competencies. This approach has been evident as programming has included Cherokee language lessons, a visit to the sacred Kituwah Mound, an introduction to clan customs, use of the contemporary personality assessment tool known as Myers-Briggs and numerous other topics and experiences.

The program includes opportunities to learn about cultural values, Cherokee social systems and gender roles, the Cherokee language, governance, healthy living, artistic expression, the natural world and the environment, sports and recreation, storytelling and humor, and indigenous peoples and their leadership initiatives, community programs and tribal heroes.

“These sessions are a great opportunity that I wouldn’t otherwise get,” said one participant.  “Talking to our elders and learning from them is always a reward.”

Participants are nominated by a Nominating Committee, and their employers support their attendance for two days each month. All aspects of the pilot program are being tested and refined based on what works best. While the program is being hosted by Cherokee Preservation Foundation during its first year, the goal is to identify another organization that will provide a permanent home of this exiting program beginning in 2012.
